Good morning! Completely new to video and I want to start out as basic as possible. I have a DSLR but I want to start on my iphone until I get the gist of everything.

My question is this…..Are the videos you take for your blog post different than the ones you would make for social media like IG and Tik Tok? I recently listened to a podcast on Eat, Blog, Talk and they were saying “hands and pans” is OUT. So did she mean for social media? I don’t know. I would think on your blog post, you would need hands and pans to show exactly how to make the recipe, no?

I watched a video that Lindsey did on making a wrap for social media. But I would think that’s not just for the blog post. Can someone give me some insight?

Thank you!!

Michele

Hey Michele!

Great idea to start with your iPhone before diving in with your DSLR. We have a couple of threads in the Forums where members weighed in on this question and how they go about the process (here and here).

You may also find this blog post on repurposing recipe videos for social channels helpful! 📹

Also going to give this post a boost to see if members have any other ideas!

Hi Ann,

So I looked at the links for repurposing a video. I’m a little confused. Not sure if you can help me. It shows that you can shoot a video horizontal for your blog post and then crop it to square for Instagram. But when I crop it to a square, it shows a black border around my video on Instagram that I don’t see on Pinch of Yum’s IG video. Do you know how I can remove that? Thanks!

Hey Michele!

Checked in with the Pinch of Yum team on this and the videos you’re seeing without the black bars were uploaded as “video posts” (before Reels became a thing!). Now, if you upload a video to Instagram, it’ll automatically be classified as a Reel, and Reels will always be in a vertical player to fill a mobile screen.

So, if you’re uploading a square video, Instagram will add those black bars to the top and bottom to make it fit the vertical Reels player. POY’s recommendation is to do one of the following:

  • upload a vertical video to Instagram to be shared as a Reel
  • OR to use your square video as a part of a carousel post.

At this time, POY actually films videos vertically and then. crops a horizontal video out of the vertical version to use on the website.

You can check out this example with POY’s Two Huge Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe and the accompanying Reel. The same video is used across both channels, but the one on the website is the horizontal version of the Reel.

I hope that helps!
