Hi there,

This question came up in a FB group that I’m in.

Apparently there are Google and Yahoo requirements coming in February for name@gmail.com and name@yourdomain.com.

Is there anyone familiar with this or know if we need to do anything in terms of how our emails are delivered?

I wish I had more info. If anyone is familiar with this, I’d really appreciate some insight.

Thanks,

Cree

I hadn’t heard anything about this — but I’d like to know if this is something we need to be concerned about.

Yes, there are changes coming, but they’re very much in everyone’s interests to reduce spam. You can read about them here.

For most of us, assuming that we’re using tools like ConvertKit or MailChimp to send bulk campaigns, the only likely change is that we’ll need to keep our email lists clean, because it’ll be really bad news if too many of our email recipients report spam.

If you’re not using a valid tool to send bulk campaigns, now is definitely the time to sign up.

Hope that helps?

Jo

@Jo I use ConvertKit. I’m assuming they will handle everything on their end.

I guess this will be the time I should clean up my list.

Thank you.

Hey everyone!

I actually bought a webinar from Alyssa Dulin (of ConvertKit) and she breaks it down with action steps for getting your email prepared. I don’t want to share the content she’s charging for (that feels unfair to her), but I wanted to share the link in case you’d like to watch/get the slide deck for yourself:

I hope that’s helpful!

Another update to say that I just got an email from ConvertKit about a free workshop they are hosting on this topic:

You have to send at least 5,000 messages per week to register, but that seems to be the only caveat.

From what I’ve read, there’s 5 main changes you’ll have to adhere to starting next month.

1: Authenticate your sending domain.

So, if you’re sending bulk emails from myfoodblog@gmail. com or something similar, you’ll need to change that to an email from your actual domain. Like myfoodblog@myfoodblog. com. Most people should have free access to a domain email from your hosting provider, or you can sign up for services like Google Workspace to get one.

2: Allow for a 1-click unsubscribe option.

In addition, removing unsubs needs to be completed within 2 days. I think most of the popular bulk email companies already do this, so you probably won’t need to do anything here. (convertkit, mailchimp, mailerlite, etc)

3: Stay below the spam threshold rate.

Google wants spam to stay below a 0.3% threshold, not sure on Yahoo. Again, most of the above companies already police this themselves, so you shouldn’t need to make any changes other than keeping your subscriber lists cleaned up.

4: Authenticate your email with SPF and DKIM.

SPF (Sender Policy Framework) is to help prevent spoofing for email addresses. DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) adds a digital signature to your emails to show it’s from you. Both of these are small changes to your DNS file. Basically, you should be able to get the text you need from your bulk email service and then check with you hosting company on how to access and add the text to your DNS. This will vary from company to company and host to host, but it’s easier than it sounds.

5: Set up a DMARC record in your DNS settings.

This only applies to people sending 5,000+ emails a day. This is a little more involved and difficult to setup. Here’s a link to Google support with more info and more links.
